flower power

Since I am working at HandyGames there is very little time for personal projects..I am sorry for my long absence! But recently someone asked me to do flower illustrations and I came up with the idea of japanese ink painting (sumi-e). I mainly copied pictures I found. Was a nice exercise though :-)

and there's also one digital approach, more like a sketch though

color experiment

Since my right arm started aching again a while ago, I was busy keeping it calm while studying animation and art (yes, I watched cartoons and read manga, but with a very observing eye ;D). After a while of non-creating I couldn't stand it anymore and grabbed my water colors and water color sketchbook an experimented a bit with them. Working without a certain shape was perfect, so I couldn't be disappointed too much in my disability. Yet in the end I was drawn back to painting faces...

snow white, you look pale...

At the end of July I was given the task to design a snow white for a short film project. This collage doesn't contain the final version. I also worked on a psychiatrist, because the film deals with what's AFTER "they lived happily ever after". But in the end we didn't really need a design for him.
The film will enter a Brothers Grimm Competition in the end of august.

good clean-up day

If there are bad hair days, do "good clean-up days" also exist?
It's like my brush strokes magically do exactly, what I want them to. Together with my friends from animation school, we are working on a TOP SECRET short film project! ;-) So the last few days I've been animating and today while working on the clean-up, instead of making hundreds of short lines, I just quickly move my hand a few times and then there it is, a wonderful expressive and accurate line. Maybe it's because of Chris Oately's advise "try to accomplish your work in one stroke in stead of using ten"

waddle waddle waddle

Hi folks!
I had some very nice holidays, so I couldn't post any new pictures. But here I go again!
Shortly before holidays, I was in the city and had some time left. I went to the Jungfernstieg in Hamburg where I wanted to read a bit. But that day lots of people decided to feed the swans and gooses and ducks that always swim around there. So I armed myself with my sketchbook and later on, at home, I added some water color.
Additionally, it was my brother-in-law's birthday and I painted a parrot, acrylics on canvas, for him (because he likes parrots, obviously). I used a reference from the great animal photgrapher Andrew Zuckermann. I wish I had more patience (and time), so I could have added more detail... Practice increases patience!

The iridiscent turquoise I used on some spots reflects the light wonderfully

back to the roots

I always loved cartoon. I started with Dinsey and lots of other american cartoons (plus japanese cartoons, only I didn't know they came from Japan back then) and later I was addicted to Anime because of Sailor Moon. Back then I wanted to become Mangaka, a japanese Comic Artist. When I saw that Manga-style is not very profitable in Germany, I studied communications design and hoped to get rid of any cartoon style. Then I went to animation school and got allover cartoony again... So this piece of art was just a test if I could draw something in Sailor Moon Series style. I feel a bit melancholic about it, because it reminds me so much of my youth. And I like it very much, because I had a great time with cartoons and my cartoon loving friends! :)

Moods

As the owner of "The Art of Brave" by Disney * Pixar I got inspired by the beautiful pencil drawings by Steve Pilcher. So I decided to practice my pencil skills. The outcome is a beginning. I still have to do more learning, practicing and practicing and learning. And I cheated with Photoshop to create more depth :p

Logo-Time

A friend asked me to make a logo for the day-care-center she works in. A few things were predetermined, such as the cross and 3 little birds. I also had a picture of the bird, which I adapted and improved. The final and approved one is above, accompanied by some earlier variations.

The Zoo

Last weekend I went to the Zoo with my family. It was the first time for my little niece. Poor girl suffered a bit from stimulus satiation... Whereas I had my sketchbook with me and suffered from lazyness. At least it resulted in one useful page ;-P

I especially put effort in the flamingos, as you can see ;)

This special animal is a peal.Or a sug. A crazy crossover anyway.

Crazy competition!

Yesterday I had one of the most crazy experiences of my life: the 24 hours film racing. Here's the thing:
Saturday morning, at 4am we recieved the theme, a prop and an action that were to include in the movie. It was allowed to use existing characters, so we prepared by drawing characters and consider a rough animation style or after effects animation with layer puppets. You'll see some works below.

Of course we used none of the existing characters.
Of course we developed a complete new style and story.
Of course the set we chose was a cinema full of characters.
21 characters, I believe.
24 hours for the film.
3 to 4 hours after the plot was decided.
3 hours before the deadline the animation was done and the last scenes were rendering in After Effects.
3:30 am the whole thing was successfully uploaded.
A group of 10 (in the beginning 11) people are still startled that the wohle thing worked out and we are all very proud and love our little "baby".
And we are the only group from Germany. The rest of the competitors are from the USA, Canada and a few Britains.

It's amazing how fullfilling animation is to me. Thank you for the opportunity, my dear comrades!

Unfortunately I cannot show the 1:15 minutes movie yet, because of the competition.
In the meantime you'll have to work with more drawings ;-)

preproduction for the 24h film racing

pre-production layer puppets - the right one was a design from amazing Eiti, which I adapted.
Cyclops designs while plot discussion -  they weren't chosen in the end

sketches for a Game Character I am drawing at the moment
This last one is a poster for a friend in my hometown. He is a pool attendant and asked me to design and illustrate a poster for a unicef - donation campaign. It was done in Photoshop. I enjoyed the work very much and I hope all you people from Usingen and the Taunus go there on the 26th may and make lots of donations!

Soon we will be together again

The original is less colorful, fitting the feeling of longing for your love. But the mobile phone app makes everything nice and shiny ;-) Emphasizing the pleasant anticipation :-D
